Kikuoka Kengyo

Japanese:
Kikuoka Kengyo
Year of death: 12 November 1847 (19 December 1847)
Year of birth: 1792
A Kyoto jiuta and sokyoku performer in the late Edo period. His name was So Meiichi. He became a kengyo in Bunka 3 (1806). He composed many jiuta sangenkyoku pieces for Kyoto-style tegotomono. His works include "Iso Chidori," "Ima Komachi," "Ume no Yado," "Kazamakura," "Katsuo," "Sasa no Tsuyu (Sake)," "Sono no Aki," "Chikubushima," "Cha Ondo," "Nagato no Haru," "Fune no Yume," "Mama no Kawa," "Miyamajishi," and "Yugao." Of these, "Mama no Kawa" was transferred to the koto by Matsuno Kengyo, and the others by Yaezaki Kengyo, and they are often performed as ensembles even today. There is an anecdote that Kikuoka and Yaezaki, who were not on good terms at first, came to recognize each other's skills through the ensemble "Tamagawa," and became known as a great duo for Kyoto-style tegotomono.
