きた‐おもて【北面】

〘名〙① 北の方角。北に向いていること。または、その場所。きたうけ。きなむき。※宇津保(970‐999頃)吹上上「宮よりきたおもて、大きなる山のほとり」※俳諧・続猿蓑(1698)春「くもる日や野中の花の北面〈猿〉」② 宮中や寝殿造りの家などで、北側のへや。奥の方にあり、女房などのいる内輪のへや。※落窪(10C後)三「『御前なる人北おもてへ』との給へば、皆往ぬ」③ 院の御所を警固する武士の詰所。ほくめん。また、そこに詰める武士。北面(ほくめん)の武士。※今鏡(1170)三「鳥羽の院うせさせ給し時は、きたをもてにさぶらひとさぶらふ下臈どもかきたてて」※愚管抄(1220)四「さてきたをもてには、武士為義、清盛など」④ (妻はあまり表に出ないで、多く奥まった北の部屋にいたところから) 他人の妻のこと。奥方(おくがた)。北の方(かた)。〔塵袋(1264‐88頃)〕
