Unzen [Hot Spring] - Unzen

Japanese: 雲仙[温泉] - うんぜん

This hot spring is a national health resort located on a plateau at an altitude of 700m between Mt. Kinugasa and Mt. Yatake in the center of the Shimabara Peninsula in Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture. It is the tourist center of the Unzen area of Unzen-Amakusa National Park. It contains acidic hydrogen sulfide springs, etc. 96°C. It is divided into Furuyu, Shinyu, and Kojigoku, and Furuyu is said to have existed since the Nara period, and a hot spring shrine was enshrined there. In Shinyu Jigoku, hot water erupts from many sulfur vents. The Unzen Road runs from the town of Obama (now Unzen City), and National Route 57 runs from the town of Shimabara.
