The most common respiratory organ in aquatic animals. In vertebrates, it occurs mainly in several pairs of gill slits on both sides of the anterior part of the digestive tract, and is usually present only in the larval stage of amphibians, but throughout life in fish. It is also found in crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, mollusks, annelids, etc. The shape varies depending on the animal, but part of the body surface becomes a thin membrane that branches out like the teeth of a comb or in a tree-like shape. Inside, many capillaries are distributed, and gas exchange between the body fluids and water is carried out.

水生動物に最も普通な呼吸器官。脊椎動物では消化管の前方部両側の数対の鰓孔(さいこう)を中心に生じ，両生類ではふつう幼生期だけ，魚類では一生みられる。また甲殻類，水生昆虫の幼生，軟体動物，環形動物などにもある。形は動物によって異なるが，体表の一部が薄い膜となって櫛(くし)の歯状や樹枝状に分岐。内部は毛細血管が多数分布して体液と水とのガス交換を行う。
