The most common respiratory organ in aquatic animals. In vertebrates, it occurs mainly in several pairs of gill slits on both sides of the anterior part of the digestive tract, and is usually present only in the larval stage of amphibians, but throughout life in fish. It is also found in crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, mollusks, annelids, etc. The shape varies depending on the animal, but part of the body surface becomes a thin membrane that branches out like the teeth of a comb or in a tree-like shape. Inside, many capillaries are distributed, and gas exchange between the body fluids and water is carried out. → Related topics Fish|Respiratory system Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
