…A Catholic order of hermits. It originated from a strict contemplative monastery founded in 1084 by Bruno (c. 1030-1101) and six companions in the deep mountains of La Grande Chartreuse near Grenoble, France. Following that spirit, the fifth abbot, Guigo, established the "Monastic Rule" in 1127 with the aim of harmonizing the hermitage and communal life, and it was approved by Pope Innocent II in 1133.
