Its official name is the National Metal and Machinery Workers' Union. It is an affiliate of Rengo. In 1946, it was founded as Zenkin Domei by uniting metal and machinery industry unions under Sōdōmei (the Japanese Trade Union Confederation). Its first chairman was Arahata Kanson. When Sōhyō was formed in July 1950, Zenkin Domei, which was made up of workers in the steel, shipbuilding, and general machinery industries, held a dissolution convention and switched to a medium-sized industry-specific organization. At that time, those opposed to Sōhyō membership were removed, and Zenkoku Kinzoku (National Metal Workers' Union) was formed in October of the same year, centered on the general machinery union. A left-right conflict over the founding convention led to one-third of the organization walking out, and this (the right wing) would later become Zenkin Domei (now Zenkin Rengo).
