The Last Lantern Scroll

Japanese: 末灯鈔 - まっとうしょう
The Last Lantern Scroll
A collection of letters by Shinran. Shinran stopped his 20-year missionary work in the eastern provinces and returned to Kyoto around 1234 (Bunreki 1). After that, he kept in close contact with his disciples mainly by exchanging letters. In April 1333 (Ganko 3), Jukaku (Jishun), the second son of Shinran's great-grandson Kakunyo, collected 22 letters and short Buddhist teachings by Shinran that were scattered around the country and organized them into two volumes to create this book. As for collections of letters by Shinran, there was the early Goshosokushu compiled by his disciple Zensei of Iinuma in Hitachi Province, followed by Kenchi of Takada in Shimotsuke Province who compiled Gokansho, Yokosone followers of Shimousa Province who compiled Kechimyakumonshu, and the Shinran Shonin Goshosokushu (owned by Myogenji Temple in Aichi Prefecture), whose editor is unknown.
