Refers to gospel songs that originated among the masses, as opposed to regular Christian hymns. Originally, it meant songs sung during the religious revival movement that occurred throughout the United States in the late 19th century, but today, Christian music that falls into the category of folk music, especially songs that feature black rhythm and a shouting style of singing, are called "gospel songs" and the singers are called "gospel singers." They are usually sung in groups of four or five people, accompanied by electric guitars and drums, and sung and performed in the style of post-World War II black popular music that is common to rhythm and blues.
