Before World War II, large, meaty breeds such as the Cochin (originally from China and improved in the UK and the US) and the Brahma (originally from India and Malay and improved in the UK and the US) were raised for meat production, although they mature late. They weighed 4.0-5.4kg. Recently, broiler chicken farming has become popular, in which fast-growing hybrids, three-way crossbreds, and four-way crossbreds are raised to weigh 1000-1800g at 8-10 weeks of age.
