After retiring from politics, the Prussian Chancellor KR vom und zum Stein, with a fervent desire to unify the German people, founded the Gesellschaft für ältere deutsche Geschichtskunde (Gesellschaft für ältere deutsche Geschichtskunde) in 1819. With the cooperation of the young and outstanding historian Georg Heinrich Pertz (1795-1876), the Society began editing the book, which compiled and published the main historical sources related to the Germanic peoples from 500 to 1500 AD, applying as rigorous textual criticism as possible.
