Born: June 4, 1635 in Paris
Died November 26, 1688. Paris. French poet and playwright. From an early age, he served as a servant to the poet Tristan Lhermitte. He also studied law, but became interested in theater, and his first work was well received. He produced many comedies and tragedies, but they were all mediocre, and at the urging of Molière, he turned to lyric tragedies. After 1673, he teamed up with the composer Lully, producing the operas Alceste (1674), Proserpina (80), and Armide (86), which is considered a masterpiece. Although he was mediocre as a tragedian, he is remembered as the true founder of opera, which used large-scale stage sets, mechanical devices, and dance.

フランスの詩人，劇作家。幼い頃から詩人トリスタン・レルミットの召使となり，また法律も学ぶが演劇に興味をもち，第1作で早くも好評を博した。喜劇，悲劇などの作品を数多く発表したが，いずれも平凡の域を出ず，モリエールにすすめられ抒情悲劇の創作に転向する。 1673年以後作曲家リュリと組み，オペラ『アルセスト』 Alceste (1674) ，『プロゼルピナ』 Proserpina (80) ，傑作といわれる『アルミッド』 Armide (86) を世に出した。悲劇作家としては凡庸であったが，大がかりな舞台装置，機械仕掛け，ダンスを使用したオペラの真の創始者として名をとどめている。
