Born: June 4, 1635 in Paris Died November 26, 1688. Paris. French poet and playwright. From an early age, he served as a servant to the poet Tristan Lhermitte. He also studied law, but became interested in theater, and his first work was well received. He produced many comedies and tragedies, but they were all mediocre, and at the urging of Molière, he turned to lyric tragedies. After 1673, he teamed up with the composer Lully, producing the operas Alceste (1674), Proserpina (80), and Armide (86), which is considered a masterpiece. Although he was mediocre as a tragedian, he is remembered as the true founder of opera, which used large-scale stage sets, mechanical devices, and dance.
