Antonie van Dyck

Flemish painter. Also spelled Van Dyck. Born in Antwerp, he studied under H. van Balen, but unusually, he is known to have set up his own independent studio at the age of 16 or 17 before joining the painters' guild, suggesting that he was a child prodigy. In 1618, he officially qualified as a master painter, and from this time on became Rubens' assistant, producing original paintings based on his master's oil sketches (such as the ceiling paintings of the Jesuit Church in Antwerp, which was burned down), making copies of those works for copperplate engraving, and also working on independent works.

フランドルの画家。バン･ダイクとも表記する。アントウェルペン(アントワープ)に生まれ，ファン･バーレンH.van Balenに師事するが，異例にも画家組合加入以前に16,17歳で独立の工房を構えていたことが知られ，神童ぶりをうかがわせる。1618年正式に親方画家の資格を得，このころからルーベンスの助手となって，師匠の油彩習作に基づく本絵の制作(焼失したアントウェルペンのイエズス会教会の天井画等)やその作品の銅版画化のための模写素描の制作に従事し，独立の作品も手がけた。
