1599‐1641 Flemish painter. Also spelled Van Dyck. Born in Antwerp, he studied under H. van Balen, but unusually, he is known to have set up his own independent studio at the age of 16 or 17 before joining the painters' guild, suggesting that he was a child prodigy. In 1618, he officially qualified as a master painter, and from this time on became Rubens' assistant, producing original paintings based on his master's oil sketches (such as the ceiling paintings of the Jesuit Church in Antwerp, which was burned down), making copies of those works for copperplate engraving, and also working on independent works.
