A village in Shimoina County, southern Nagano Prefecture. Population 2,551 (1995). It lies in the Toyama River basin, a tributary of the Tenryu River, and borders Shizuoka Prefecture to the south. The Akaishi Mountains occupy the southeast and the Ina Mountains to the northwest, with the Toyama River running from northeast to southwest along the Median Tectonic Line that runs between them. The area along the river was long ago known as Toyama-go, and Wada, the central settlement on the Akiha Kaido (National Route 152), flourished during the Edo period as a post town for people making pilgrimages to Akiha Shrine in Totomi. The Akiha Kaido was a route for transporting salt from Mikawa to Shinano, and also for transporting timber. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
