[History of the discovery of orchids]
The first Western orchid plant was brought to Europe in 1731 from Providence Island in the West Indies. This plant was Bletia verecunda R.Br., and it bloomed the following year, becoming the first Western orchid in Europe. After that, in 1778, Phajus grandifolius Lindl. (= P. tankarvilleae (Banks) Bl.) was imported to England from Southeast Asia, and in 1818, Cattleya labiata Lindl. was discovered in Brazil, and so Western orchids began to be discovered one after another.
