…As is clear from the prayer of Serapion of Thmuis (4th century), the ancient anointing of the sick was intended for perfect health of mind and body, and did not specifically anticipate death. As anointing in the liturgy became more specialized in the Middle Ages, the anointing of the sick came to have the meaning of preparing for death as the final anointing, or extreme unction, and was called the extreme unction, and there was a tendency to postpone receiving it until the moment of death. Today, it is called the anointing of the sick again, and the original form of the sacrament for the sick is being restored (Catholic Ritual Book, Anointing of the Sick, 1980). …

…トゥムイスのセラピオン(4世紀)の祈願に明らかなように，古代の〈病者の塗油〉は心と体の完全な健康を意図するもので，特に死を予期したものではなかった。中世になって典礼における塗油が分化するに伴い，〈病者の塗油〉は最終の塗油すなわち終油として死に備える意味を持つようになり，〈終油の秘跡extrema unctio〉と呼ばれ，臨終まで受けることを延ばす傾向が生じた。現在では，再び〈病者の塗油〉と呼ばれるようになり，本来の病者のための秘跡のあり方が復興されつつある(カトリック儀式書《病者の塗油》1980)。…
