These are fishing companies organized as corporations, and although their numbers are small compared to small fishermen's households and individual businesses in Japan, they account for more than 50% of the value of the catch. Maruha, Nippon Suisan, Nichiro, Kyokuyo, and Takara Suisan are the major companies, and they were revived when the North Pacific fishing industry was reopened in 1952, and they monopolized deep-sea fishing with mother ship-based salmon and trout, crab, bottom trawl, whaling, and northern and southern trawl. In response to the westernization of dietary habits, they expanded into fish ham and sausage, instant foods, and processed livestock products, strengthening their character as general food companies. They also expanded into overseas joint venture fishing in Southeast Asia, Central and South America, and Africa, and furthermore, they established a conglomerate-like dominance by concurrently operating fishing equipment production and food sales.
