…These films were not very different from the traditional Shinpa films, but they were well received by the audience, and as an extension of them, “Ferry-Spring” was made, starring Iwata Yukichi and Kurishima Sumiko (1923, directed by Ikeda Yoshinobu), which incorporated the popular song “Kare Susuki” (since it was a silent film, the lyrics were subtitled and sung by a narrator or singer). This became a huge hit, and “Kouta films” began to be mass-produced by various companies. Among these, Teikine’s “Kago no Tori” (1924, directed by Matsumoto Eiichi) was a big hit, making the star, Sawa Ranko, a popular star.
