A Norwegian dependency located between 10° and 35° east longitude and 74° and 81° north latitude in the Arctic Ocean. It consists of the Spitsbergen Islands (West Spitsbergen, Northeast Island, Barents Island, and Edge Island) and Bear Island. Most of the island is a plateau at an altitude of 300 to 600 meters, and 90% of it is covered by glaciers. In addition to fishing, coal mining is carried out. It was discovered by Vikings in the 12th century, and Willem Barentsz visited the island in 1596. It was subsequently under joint rule by Norway, Russia, and Sweden, but became a Norwegian territory in 1920. Area: 61,022 km2 . Population: 2,394 (2011).
