…He became a non-commissioned officer at the age of 17, and was promoted quickly due to his military achievements. He married Napoleon's relative Désirée, and became a marshal in 1804 and Duke of Pontecorvo in 1806. He served as the emperor's right-hand man and conducted campaigns around the country. In 1810, the Swedish parliament chose him as the heir to the throne, entrusted with recapturing Finland from Russia, and he changed his French name, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, to Karl Johan. He came into power around 1811, but against the will of the parliament, he broke off ties with Napoleon and allied with Russia, and thereafter pursued a pro-Russian foreign policy. …
