…Although it does not have many topics, it is well-considered historically, and was translated into various languages, becoming the starting point for subsequent research into the history of technology. Research progressed particularly in Germany in the 19th century, and in 1899 Theodor Beck (1839-1917) wrote “History of Machines” which set a typical example. This work begins with Heron of Alexandria, and introduces ancient books by Vitruvius, Cato the Elder, Biringuccio, G. Agricola, G. Cardano, Jacques Besson, Agostino Ramelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and others from the 15th and 16th centuries with modern illustrations, and ends with Watt's steam engine. It was a specialized book on the history of technology that went beyond the previous stories of invention. …
