...The elements of astronomy unique to India include 27 or 28 star signs (nakṣatra). The Śārdula‐karṇa‐avadāna (translated into Chinese as the Mahādhāka-sūtra), a Buddhist text from around the 1st century AD, is a good example of astrology from this period, in which the relationship between the sun, moon, and star signs is the basis of divination. In the Garga‐saṃhitā of the same period, omens are expanded to cover all aspects of natural phenomena.
