A museum that collects and studies historical materials about the history and folklore of a certain region and makes them available to the public. In Japan, there is the National Museum of Japanese History, which is an institution directly under the Ministry of Education, and there are many other public and private facilities of this type around the country, called "local history museums" or "folklore museums." There are also many national and other museums in Europe and the United States that exhibit historical artifacts and documents, as well as ethnic and folklore materials. One of the most famous is the Museum für Deutsche Volkskunde (German Folk Museum) in Berlin (established in 1889). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
