History and Folklore Museum - Rekishiminzokuhakubutsukan

Japanese: 歴史民俗博物館 - れきしみんぞくはくぶつかん

A museum that collects and studies historical materials about the history and folklore of a certain region and makes them available to the public. In Japan, there is the National Museum of Japanese History, which is an institution directly under the Ministry of Education, and there are many other public and private facilities of this type around the country, called "local history museums" or "folklore museums." There are also many national and other museums in Europe and the United States that exhibit historical artifacts and documents, as well as ethnic and folklore materials. One of the most famous is the Museum für Deutsche Volkskunde (German Folk Museum) in Berlin (established in 1889).

一定の地域の歴史と民俗についての史資料を収集･研究して一般に公開する博物館。日本には，文部省直轄の機関として国立歴史民俗博物館があり，ほかに各地に〈郷土史料館〉〈民俗資料館〉などとよばれる公立･私立のその種の施設が多数ある。また欧米各国にも歴史上の遺物･文書や民族･民俗資料を展示する，国立その他の博物館が多く，なかでもベルリンのドイツ民俗博物館Museum für Deutsche Volkskunde(1889創設)が名高い。
