Halophytes - Halophytes

A plant that can survive by increasing the salt concentration in the plant body and immersing it in seawater. In Japan, it grows in salt marshes (salt wetlands) along calm coastlines surrounded by sandbars. It is found not only in salt marshes but also in salt pools on reclaimed land and former salt fields. However, such places are becoming less common these days. Saltwo, Chishima Lojotuna, and Umimidori are found in Hokkaido, while Hamamatsuna and Narrow-leaved Hamaakaza are found throughout Honshu. Other representative halophytes include Shichimenso (northern Kyushu), Hamasaj (central and southern Honshu), and Fukudo (west of the Kii Peninsula). The beautiful autumn foliage of Saltwo on the shores of Lake Notoro in Hokkaido is well known.
