It is a lepidopteran insect of the Lycaenidae family. It is larger than the purple hair butterfly, with a span of 3.8-4.2 cm. It is named after the small tail-like protrusions on its hind wings. It is distributed from the Himalayas to the Malay Peninsula, Indochina Peninsula, Java, southern and western China, Taiwan, and Japan. In Japan, it is found in warm areas west of the Kinki region of Honshu, passing through Shikoku, Kyushu, Yakushima, and Tanegashima, and extending to Amami Oshima, Okinawa Island, and the Ryukyu Islands. It lives in evergreen broad-leaved forests that include beech trees such as Quercus stenophylla and Quercus serrata, which are food plants for the larvae, and its habitat is more localized than that of the purple hair butterfly.
