Kakatsugayu - Fried rice porridge

An evergreen wisteria or woody plant of the family Moraceae (APG classification: Moraceae). Also known as Yamamikan. Larger trees can reach a height of 10 meters and a diameter of 10 centimeters. The branches and leaves contain latex. The axils have thorns about 1.5 centimeters long, which are either needle-like or bent upside down like a crochet. The leaves are alternate and stalked, oblong or obovate, 4-7 centimeters long, entire with thin leathery edges. The globular flower heads grow in one or two axillary clusters, and are dioecious. The aggregate fruits are about 2 centimeters in diameter, yellow when ripe, and can be eaten raw along with the young leaves. The wood and roots are used to make a yellow dye. They grow in the hills of southwestern Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa, and are distributed in Southeast Asia, India, Australia, and East Africa.

クワ科（APG分類：クワ科）の常緑藤本(とうほん)または木本。別名ヤマミカン。大きなものは高さ10メートル、径10センチメートルにもなる。枝や葉は乳液を含む。葉腋(ようえき)に長さ約1.5センチメートルの刺(とげ)を生じ、刺は針状か逆さに曲がってかぎ針状。葉は互生し柄があり、長楕円(ちょうだえん)形ないし倒卵形で長さ4～7センチメートル、全縁で薄い革質。球形の頭状花序は1、2個で腋生し、雌雄異株。集合果は径約2センチメートル、黄色に熟し若葉とともに生食できる。材や根は黄色染料とする。本州南西部から四国、九州、沖縄の丘陵地に生え、東南アジア、インド、オーストラリア、東アフリカに分布する。
