In Europe, from the Mannerism to the Baroque period, small paintings were displayed in collectors' cabinets along with art objects, jewels, old coins, plant and animal specimens, etc. The subjects are diverse, including mythology, genres, allegories, landscapes, and still lifes, but all are characterized by their intricate and decorative craft-like nature. Representative painters include Hans Rottenhammer (1564-1625) and Elsheimer, who were from Germany and active in Italy around 1600, as well as Jan Bruegel the Elder and Francken II (1581-1642), who were from Flanders at the same time.
