Sonezaki

Japanese: 曾根崎 - そねざき

This area lies in the south-central part of Kita-ku, Osaka City, and is the area southeast of JR Osaka Station. It developed as an entertainment district based on Sonezaki Shinchi, which was established along the Shijimi River (Sonezaki River) that was renovated in 1696. After a major fire in 1909, the Shijimi River was filled in, but the surrounding area was rebuilt as a place for rental seats and restaurants. Today, it is the center of the Kita entertainment district, with many bars and restaurants. The Shijimi River is known as the setting for "The Love Suicides at Amijima," and Tsuyutenjin Shrine (Ohatsu Tenjin) is known as the setting for "The Love Suicides at Sonezaki" (both written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon).

大阪市北区中央南部，JR大阪駅の南東一帯の地区。元禄9 (1696) 年改修された蜆川 (しじみがわ・曾根崎川) に沿って設けられた曾根崎新地を基盤に，遊興地として発展。 1909年の大火で蜆川は埋立てられたが，付近一帯は貸席，料亭の地として復興。現在はバー，料理店が集中し「キタ」の繁華街の中心をなす。蜆川は『心中天網島』の，露天神社 (お初天神) は『曾根崎心中』 (ともに近松門左衛門作) の舞台として知られる。
