A city in the west of Shimane Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. It is located on the alluvial lowland of the Hamada River, and the central city area along the San'in Main Line became the castle town of the Furuta clan, which had a fief of 50,000 koku in 1619, and has since been the center of the Iwami region. It is the end point of the Hamada Expressway. Hamada Port developed as a trading port with the continent and a port of call on the westward route, and is the prefecture's number one fishing port, with shipbuilding, canning, and kamaboko factories, a fish market, and one of the largest catches in the country. It is also a producer of Sekishu roofing tiles and furniture. There are many scenic coastal spots, including the ruins of Iwami Kokubunji Temple (historic site) and the ruins of Hamada Castle. The area around Mount Ungetsu and Mount Osa on the border with Hiroshima Prefecture belongs to the West Chugoku Mountains Quasi-National Park. In October 2005, the towns of Misumi, Asahi, Kinjo, and Yasaka in Naka District were incorporated. A specialty of Misumi Town, high-quality washi paper made from locally grown paper mulberry is known as "Sekishu-banshi" and the manufacturing technique was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan in 1969. Sekishu-banshi was registered as a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009, and in 2014 it was relisted as a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage along with Hosokawa-shi and Honminoshi as "Washi: Japanese Handmade Papermaking Techniques". 690.66 km2 . 61,713 people (2010). → Related Articles Kokufu | Tatebayashi Domain Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
