Mount Omoto

Japanese: 於茂登山 - おもとやま

Also known as Mt. Omoto, this mountain is located in the north central part of Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Prefecture. It is the highest peak in the prefecture, at 526m above sea level. It is the source of Ishigaki Island's two major rivers, the Miyara River and the Nagura River, and its geology is made of flower rock. There are colonies of Castanopsis trees from the base to the summit, and Ryukyu bamboo also grows on the summit. Butterflies such as the Asahinakimadaraseri and the Masakiura-namie-no-jay can also be seen. The Yellow-margined Box Turtle, which lives in the same area, and the wild habitat of the Kanhizakura cherry blossoms on the northern slope are natural monuments. [Machida Munehiro]
