Counter Pastoral

...This is probably why many excellent pastorals, including Milton's pastoral lament Lycidas, contain strong satire. Also, when pastoral poets could not bear the pastoral fictional conventions that the countryside is peaceful and beautiful, and the shepherd is innocent and happy, they sometimes wrote counter-pastorals that emphasize the exhaustion of rural areas and the hardships of the shepherd's life. Pastorals are literature about shepherds and sung in the voice of shepherds, but they are written by intellectuals such as court poets.
