January 22, 1905 (January 9, Russian calendar) - Incident in which a worker in St. Petersburg was shot to death by the military Following defeats such as the fall of Port Arthur in the Russo-Japanese War, anti-war movements intensified, and a general strike broke out in the capital, St. Petersburg. On this day (Sunday), 140,000 workers led by Gapon were marching to petition Nicholas II to open a parliament when they were shot by the military in the square in front of the Winter Palace, resulting in over 3,000 dead and injured. This marked the beginning of the First Russian Revolution, and revolutionary movements spread throughout the country, leading to the Tsar making a concession and promising to open the Duma (parliament).

日露戦争における旅順 (りよじゆん) 陥落などの敗北で戦争反対の動きが強まり，首都ペテルブルクでゼネストが起こったのを背景として，ガポンの指導する14万の労働者が，この日（日曜日），議会開設をニコライ２世に請願しようとして行進中，冬宮前の広場で軍隊に射撃され，3000人をこえる死傷者をだした。これが第１次ロシア革命の発端となって，全国に革命運動が広まり，皇帝は譲歩してドゥーマ（国会）の開設を約した。
