Port Arthur

Japanese: 旅順 - りょじゅん
Port Arthur
A district of Dalian City at the southwestern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in Liaoning Province, China. From 1950 to 1981, together with Dalian, it was known as Lvda. Between the Jinhua Mountain in the east and the Laohuwei Peninsula in the west, there is a 270m-wide waterway that makes it a strategic location. There are two ports, east and west, in the bay; the eastern port is the old town and is a military port, while the western port is the new town and is a commercial port. Its former name was Shishikou. It has been a key location for maritime traffic since the Tang Dynasty, and at the end of the Qing Dynasty it became a military port for the Beiyang Fleet. It was occupied by the British and French forces in 1860, and by Japan during the Sino-Japanese War. After the Triple Intervention, Russia leased it, but after the Russo-Japanese War, Japan leased it again until 1945. It was then occupied and managed by the Soviet Union for a time. In 1955, the Soviet troops withdrew, and it became a military port for the Chinese Navy. It is also a resort town.
