...On the other hand, in 1797, Nicolas Jacques Conté (1755-1805) first came up with the idea of a barometer using a thin diaphragm, and in 1844, Lucian Vidie (1805-66) created a vacuum chamber with a corrugated diaphragm attached, and invented a barometer that measured pressure using its elastic deformation. Vidie named this the aneroid barometer, from the Greek anēros, which means "not liquid," in contrast to the mercury barometer. This type of elastic pressure gauge was developed into the Bourdon tube pressure gauge, which was invented independently by M. Schinz and Eugéne Bourdon (1808-84) in 1849.
