The capital of the Abbasid dynasty (750-1258) changed rapidly from Kufa to the new capital of Hashimiya in the north and then to Anbar to the west of Baghdad after the first caliph, Saffah (750-754), ascended to the throne in Kufa. The second caliph, Mansur (754-775), moved the capital back from Anbar to Hashimiya shortly after ascending to the throne, but since it was close to Kufa, which had a large Shiite population, and was politically unstable, it was necessary to find another capital suitable for the new dynasty. …
