...From around the 8th century, Yakshas (demon demons, yakshas) and Yakshis were assigned to each patriarch, many of whom were gods of Hindu origin. Among them, Gomukha (Yaksha), Ambikā, and Rohiṇī (all Yakshis) are famous, and there are many examples of Ambikas, who sit on lions and have children on their laps. Naigameṣa, of which there are many examples from ancient times, is a ram-headed or horse-headed Yaksha.
