He gained popularity with many original rakugo stories, starting with his own performance of Kasanegafuchi Gojitsu Kaidan (Shinkei Kasanegafuchi) in 1859 (Ansei 6). Especially after the Tenpo Reforms, theater performances were limited to the Saruwaka Sanza Theater behind the Asakusa Kannon Temple, far from the center of Edo, and it became difficult for the general public to go to see them. As a result, his rakugo stories, which used flashy costumes and props to bring in the atmosphere of kabuki, became even more popular. …
