[Lineage and distribution]
Russian belongs to the Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family, and together with Ukrainian and Belarusian, it forms the Eastern group (East Slavic languages). Russian was widely used throughout the former Soviet Union as an official language and as a language of higher education and academic research. According to the 1979 census, Russian was the mother tongue of 153.5 million people, and Russian was the second language of 61.3 million people, a total of 214.8 million people, which was about 82% of the total population of the former Soviet Union.
