...Public service advertisements, also called public service announcements, are advertisements made for social causes or movements such as resource conservation, environmental protection, and the eradication of cancer, and also include opinion advertisements. The English word "advertising" (advertisement) comes from the Latin word "advertere," which means "to turn attention" or "to draw attention," and was first used in the newsbook "Mercurious politicus" in November 1655. The word "advertising" began to appear in newspapers around 1872 (Meiji 5), and is said to have come into general use around 1887.
