Malunion - Henkeiichiyu (English spelling)

Japanese: 変形治癒 - へんけいちゆ（英語表記）malunion

This refers to a condition in which a fracture heals while remaining displaced. This is caused by incomplete treatment of the fracture, i.e. incomplete reduction and fixation, or by suppuration of the fracture site. When malunion occurs, not only is there a visible deformity, but it often also leaves the affected limb functionally impaired. However, in children, if there is a certain degree of deformity, it is expected that it will be corrected naturally over time. In general, the younger the child, the greater the ability to correct, and the more difficult it is to occur the older the child is and the closer to the center of the long bone.

骨折が転位したまま癒合した状態をいう。その原因は骨折の不完全な治療，すなわち不完全な整復･固定であったり，骨折部の化膿などによる。変形治癒を起こすと，外観上変形がみられるのみならず，ときに患肢の機能障害を残すことが多い。ただし小児の場合には，ある程度の変形であれば経過とともに自然に矯正されていくことが期待される。一般的には，その矯正能は年齢が低ければ低いほど旺盛であり，年長になればなるほど，また長管骨の中央に近づけば近づくほど起こりにくくなる。
