A city in the western part of the Nara Basin in Nara Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1991. Its center is Shimoda. It is a rural area with thriving grape growing and home-based sock manufacturing. It is served by the Wakayama Line, Kintetsu Osaka Line, Kintetsu Minami Osaka Line, and the Nishi-Meihan Expressway, and has many commuters to Osaka City. Agriculture has shifted from being centered on rice to suburban-type production of vegetables and chrysanthemums, and industries such as casting, aluminum, and plastics have also been established here. Diamond dust has been collected from Mt. Nijo in the west since the Middle Ages, and sandpaper made from this sand is a specialty product. Mining is no longer in progress, but production continues. 24.26 km2 . Population 75,227 (2010).
