A city in the western part of the Nara Basin in Nara Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1991. Its center is Shimoda. It is a rural area with thriving grape growing and home-based sock manufacturing. It is served by the Wakayama Line, Kintetsu Osaka Line, Kintetsu Minami Osaka Line, and the Nishi-Meihan Expressway, and has many commuters to Osaka City. Agriculture has shifted from being centered on rice to suburban-type production of vegetables and chrysanthemums, and industries such as casting, aluminum, and plastics have also been established here.
