…They were seen as a source of taint to the general population (caste Hindus) belonging to the four varnas, and were discriminated against in all aspects of social life as people who were untouchable. They are called achūt in Hindi and untouchable in English, and Gandhi gave them the name harijan, which means children of God. In the West, they are also known as pariahs.
