"Kyushu Sakuragayatsuchi no Daruma" - Daruma from Kashu Sakuragayatsuchi

...This is a group of works with the motifs of homosexuality and masochism, based on the true story of a loyal retainer protecting a precious scroll of Daruma doll with his own blood during a fire at the Hosokawa family home, leaving the doll stained in blood. The first dramatization was the Kyoto Hotei-za's "Kashiyu Sakuraga Yatsuchi no Daruma" in 1712 (Shotoku 2), which was followed by the Osaka Kado play "Asakusa Miracle Record" (written by Chikamatsu Tokuzō) in May 1797 (Kansei 9), which reconstructed the story against the backdrop of the family feud between the Hosokawa and Akita families and became a huge hit. It was introduced to Edo in April 1800 at the Ichimura-za's "Otoko Musubi Chikai no Riyugan," which was basically the same as the previous work. ...
