Dicotyledonous plants. Most are herbaceous plants or shrubs, sometimes climbing plants. There are about 250 genera and 2,500 species distributed mainly in arid regions such as the tropics of both the Old and New Worlds, the Mediterranean region, and Australia (Figure).
