Wareru Dhammathat

The Dhammatha is a code of law of Myanmar (Myanmar law) compiled by Warel, the founder of the Pegu dynasty (1287-1539). It is written in Mon. The framework of the code seems to have been based on the Sanskrit Dharmasastra, but many clauses of the code, especially the Brahminical elements, have been almost entirely removed to create an original code. The priesthood is ignored, and marriage is no longer treated as a sacred ceremony. The Pali Dhammasattam is composed mainly of provisions corresponding to the civil and criminal laws contained in the eighth and ninth chapters of the Indian Manusitas, but the Mon Dhammatha is a translation of the Pali Dhammasattam and is completely different in content and structure from the Sanskrit Dharmasastra.

ペグー朝(1287‐1539)の始祖ワレルによって集大成されたミャンマーの法典(ダンマタ)。モン語で書かれている。法典は枠組みをサンスクリットのダルマ･シャーストラに仰いだとみられるが，その中のかなりの条項，なかでもバラモン的要素はほとんどすべて取り除かれて独自のものとなっている。祭司制は無視され，結婚はもはや神聖なる儀式としては取り扱われていない。パーリ語のダンマサッタムはインドの《マヌ法典》の中の第8章と第9章とに包含されている民法および刑法に相当する規定を中心に構成されているが，モン語のダンマタはこのパーリ語のダンマサッタムの翻訳であって，サンスクリットのダルマ･シャーストラとは内容も構成もまったく異なったものである。
