Utsunomiya Tomotsuna

A military commander in the early Kamakura period. He was the son of Hatta Munetsuna, and was called Saburo and Saemonnojo. He served as a warrior under Emperor Toba and Emperor Goshirakawa, and in 1182, during the Jisho-Juei Civil War, he returned to Shimotsuke and joined Minamoto no Yoritomo. He participated in the Oshu War in 1189 and distinguished himself in battle. In 1194, following a complaint from Ise Grand Shrine and the governor of Shimotsuke, he was charged by the Imperial Court with seizing over 100 cho of public land, and was temporarily exiled to Tosa. He was later pardoned, and retired to Obaneji Temple (Amida Temple) in Mashiko, Shimotsuke Province, where he became a monk and lived out the rest of his life in solitude, calling himself Ju Amida Buddha. 鎌倉前期の武将。八田宗綱の子,三郎,左衛門尉を称する。鳥羽・後白河上皇に武者として仕え,治承・寿永内乱期の寿永1(1182)年に下野に帰国して,源頼朝に属した。文治5(1189)年の奥州合戦に参陣して戦功を挙げた。建久5(1194)年伊勢皇大神宮および下野国司の訴えにより,朝廷から公田100町余の押領の罪に問われ一時土佐に配流された。のち許されて,下野国益子の尾羽寺(阿弥陀寺)に出家遁世して重阿弥陀仏と称し,仏道三昧の余世を送った。尾羽寺は夭折した子息業綱の菩提を弔うため建立した寺である。<参考文献>『宇都宮市史』3巻
