Imperial Way Faction

Japanese: 皇道派 - こうどうは

In the early Showa period, a faction within the Army that was in conflict with the Control Faction was formed by Sadao Araki and Jinzaburo Masaki. Its influence grew when Araki became Minister of War (1931). Made up mainly of young officers of the junior rank, they were influenced by Ikki Kita and attempted to bring about domestic reforms under the direct rule of the Emperor through direct action, which led to conflict with the Control Faction, which was mainly made up of mid-ranking officers of the field rank. The dismissal of Inspector General Masaki intensified the conflict, resulting in the Aizawa Incident (1935) and the February 26 Incident (1936), but the military purge advocated by the Control Faction led to its downfall after the incidents.

荒木貞夫・真崎甚三郎らが中心となり形成。荒木の陸相就任（1931）で勢力を拡大した。尉官級の青年将校を主体とし，彼らは北一輝の影響をうけ，直接行動により天皇親政の国内改革を実現しようとはかり，佐官級中堅将校中心の統制派と対立した。真崎教育総監の罷免で対立が激化し，相沢事件（'35），二・二六事件（'36）をおこしたが，事件後，統制派が唱えた粛軍により没落した。
