A perennial plant of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). It has a short rhizome and an upright culm that is 0.5-1 meter tall. In May and June, it produces cylindrical inflorescences at the end of the culm. The spikelets are 4-5 cm long and slightly purple. The anthers are 2.5-3 mm long and dark yellow. Native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa, where they sometimes become naturalized. A. japonicus Steud. is similar to this plant, but is an annual plant with slightly longer spikelets that are pale yellow-green and anthers that are about 1 mm long and pale yellow.
