1857‐1916 A physician from central Java, Indonesia, and a pioneer of the ethnic enlightenment movement. The son of a lower-ranking nobleman near Yogyakarta, he completed a European primary school, which was unusual at the time, and then graduated with honors from the Native American Medical School, where he served as an assistant for several years from 1872. He later returned to Yogyakarta and worked in the government's medical affairs department until 1899, and in 1901 became editor-in-chief of the local newspaper, Retnodumilah. While introducing the current situation in other countries, he also wanted to promote education for his fellow Javanese, and in 1906 he resigned from his position as editor-in-chief and began a campaign tour throughout Java, hoping to establish a scholarship system for poor young people.
