A commercial city in southern New Mexico, United States. Population 35,582 (2000). It is close to the Sacramento Mountains. The surrounding area is a trading center for livestock, irrigated agriculture, and timber production. It is home to Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range, where the world's first atomic bomb explosion took place on July 16, 1945. The town was founded in 1898 when the Southern Pacific Railroad passed through. The White Sands National Monument is located nearby.
