A tourist and resort city in central Chile adjacent to the port of Valparaiso. With a population of 322,220 (1995), in the summer many people visit the city to swim in the sea and escape the heat, not only from within Chile but also from neighboring countries. It is close (120 km) to the capital, Santiago, and many of Chile's middle and upper income classes seem to move to this city mainly for the music festival in January. Normally it also serves as a suburban city of Valparaiso. It is a beautiful city with a licensed casino, parks and other tourist facilities.
